Thing's     Matter

"All matter has life."
—Jane Bennett, "The Force of Things: Steps toward an Ecology of Matter"
THING'S MATTER is a collective of graduate students from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee seeking to make a difference in our own communities by researching, discussing, and inviting others to an equitable conversation about the way we relate to our materials, commodities, and waste.

A contemporary sonnet: “Polar Sequences: York Factory 1872” is the first in a series, each tied to a specific place in the Arctic regions. York Factory was a settlement of the Hudson Bay Company and located in Northeastern Manitoba. It was a hub for fur trading in the region for many years, but after severe overconsumption, effectively dwindled to desuetude in the early 1870’s. My intent with the poem was to highlight a paradox of consumption. The poem references “rabbit starvation,” which is a type of protein sickness that arises from a diet consisting only of rabbits. The lack of fat in the diet is eventually fatal.
